Florida High School Football Teams to Watch

It’s our ninth installment of High School Football Teams to Watch! Today we are focusing on the Sunshine State- Florida.

The top Florida high school football teams to watch this year are Central High School (Miami), Washington High School (Miami), St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Fort Lauderdale), Apopka High School, and Manatee High School (Fort Lauderdale). Now let’s take a closer look.

The city of Miami houses a lot of star talent this year for high school football and Central High School is no exception. In addition to a state title, the Central Rockets are going after a national title this season. New head coach Roland Smith will have no problem working the Rockets on the field with the immense amount of talented already there, such as running back duo Joseph Yearby and Dalvin Cook.

Booker T. Washington High School wants revenge this year after Central High School broke their 14-game winning streak last season. Currently ranked number nine in the nation, the Washington Tornados are ready to crush anyone in its path. Returning quarterback  Treon Harris, linebacker Chad Thomas, and a wealth of offensive talent come together to make a versatile and well-rounded team.

St. Thomas Aquinas turned some heads when they beat then-national No. 1 Manatee High School and earned a Class 7A state title. Head Coach Rocco Casullo is hoping to see the same success this season. Defensive tackle Anthony Moten and defensive back Al Harris will lead the stout defense unit while Madre London will be positioned as running back. The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders will get some help from Quarterback Wade Freebeck and receiver Devante Peete as well.

The Apopka Blue Darters made headlines last year when they took home the Class 8A state championship. This year it looks like Apopka High School are going after it again. Head coach Rick Darlington will see quarterback Zach Darlington return which will help the offense be even more powerful. If the team’s defense can pull it together, Apopka High School will be a team to watch out for this year.

The Manatee High School Hurricanes are ready for a fight this season. If senior linebacker Greg Reaves can perform on the field this year, the Hurricanes will come out strong considering linebacking play was one of Manatee’s bigger weaknesses last season. We will see what head coach Joe Kinnan has in store on the gridiron.
